8 Reasons A Trump-Like President Would Be Impossible In Our Republic

Trump will meet Charles Windsor later this month. Monarchists love scaremongering by telling us that by abolishing the monarchy, we would risk having a president like Trump. Whether out of ignorance or on purpose, they are wrong. A DENECHOS (Democratically Elected Non Executive Ceremonial Head of State) is the way forward.

Here are eight ways a British non-executive president replacing the monarchy would not at all resemble Donald Trump, thanks to proper checks and balances:

1. Ceremonial Role Only: A British non-executive president would have a ceremonial and symbolic role, with no control over government policy, unlike Trump who held executive power as President of the United States.

2. Bound by Constitutional Convention: The British constitution (even though uncodified at this time) relies heavily on convention and restraint. A non-executive president would be expected to act within strict, non-partisan limits.

3. No Command of the Military: Unlike the U.S. President, the British non-executive president would not be Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, stripping away a significant source of power.

4. Limited Media Dominance: With no policy-making powers, a British president would receive less daily political media coverage, reducing opportunities to manipulate public opinion for personal gain. Think humble Irish or Icelandic president. They just get on with the job!

5. Impeachment or Dismissal Mechanism: There would likely be a formal legal process for removing a president who misbehaves, providing a clear check unlike the difficulty of removing a U.S. president mid-term.

6. No Use of Executive Orders: The British president would have no authority to unilaterally issue directives like U.S. executive orders, limiting their ability to bypass Parliament or civil service.

7. Expected Political Neutrality: Similar to the monarchy, a non-executive president would be expected to remain above party politics, unlike Trump’s overtly partisan style.

8. Term Limits or Fixed Terms: Unlike Trump’s attempts to undermine electoral norms, a British president would be constrained by fixed terms and clear rules preventing indefinite extension of tenure.

Our job is to continue myth-busting and spreading the word about DENECHOS (Democratically Elected Non Executive Ceremonial Heads of State).
