Art Republic

Art has always been a crucial tool in political movements, especially against entrenched institutions like the monarchy. It can also inspire by showing us the alternatives.

In an anti-monarchy, pro-republic campaign, art can help in powerful ways:

1.Art makes the movement visible and emotional

A mural, digital poster or photo can symbolise ideas instantly: a crumbling crown, a chained heir, or a deceased billionaire wearing a hat of jewels near a homeless person.

Murals, especially in working-class and urban areas, can make the cause feel local and urgent, not distant or academic.

Satirical cartoons can mock the monarchy’s absurdities, making them seem ridiculous rather than sacred or inevitable.

Emotion beats argument in politics. Art creates anger, pride and laughter.

2. Art bypasses censorship and “official” narratives

The monarchy is wrapped in tradition, ceremony, and carefully managed PR.

Cartoons and digital media can puncture the royal image in ways that speeches or articles cannot — making the monarchy look silly, small, outdated.

Sharp caricatures can turn the royal family into mere celebrities, making it harder for the establishment to demand deference.

Art can go viral before authorities or traditional media have time to react.

3. Art offers simple, repeatable symbols

Every major movement has a few iconic images (think Che Guevara posters, or the suffragette banners).

The republican movement has the colour yellow and the No More Royals symbol.

Simple, recognisable symbols help people feel part of something bigger.

4. Digital art and posters can mobilise quickly

A single viral image (a clever meme, a brutal cartoon) can reach millions overnight.

Movements like Extinction Rebellion or Black Lives Matter have shown how digital visual culture — simple posters, shareable infographics — can pull people into marches, petitions, boycotts.

Pro-republic campaigns can use digital art to announce marches, celebrate victories, or highlight royal scandals instantly.

You don’t need mass media if you have mass imagery.

Where can we take inspiration from?

How about from Led By Donkeys? Their creative stunts ranging from drone work, projected images to fake adverts have gained a lot of media attention.

The artist behind Wankers of the World has released many creative pieces and products in order to mock and criticise the monarchy.

The Wokerati Party website has lots of creative anti-monarchy merchandise including posters and badges.

But what about pro-republic art? This is what we are lacking.

Spain was once a republic and Spanish republicans today use the colours of the old republican flag as inspiration.

In Britain, we do not have such tradition, but as always, we can look to Ireland for ideas.

Greens For A Republic are always looking for artists, poets, musicians, digital designers and other creative members to create inspirational art for our cause.

A future project is an art exhibition based on anti-monarchy v pro-republic displays.
